Happiness Is a Choice—and the Hardest Journey I’ve Ever Taken

For much of my life, I thought happiness was something you stumbled upon—an outcome of success, recognition, or the right circumstances. I believed it came from achievements, relationships, or moments of fleeting joy.

But over time, life taught me an uncomfortable truth: happiness isn’t external. It’s a choice.

The Hard Truth About Happiness

Choosing happiness sounds simple, but it’s anything but easy. It requires a willingness to face your inner world—your beliefs, your fears, and your insecurities—and ask yourself some tough questions:

What’s holding me back from being happy right now?

What am I waiting for to feel good enough, worthy enough, or complete enough?

Why do I tie my happiness to things outside of my control?

For me, the answers weren’t always pretty. I realized I’d been chasing happiness through accomplishments and validation, thinking those things would finally make me feel whole. But when the applause stopped, the emptiness remained.

Happiness Is an Inside Job

The hardest part about choosing happiness is realizing it starts with you. It’s not about fixing everything in your life; it’s about shifting how you see yourself and your circumstances. Happiness doesn’t mean ignoring pain or pretending everything is okay. It means acknowledging your struggles and still finding moments of light amidst the darkness.

For me, this journey has looked like:

Letting go of perfectionism and embracing the messy, imperfect process of growth.

Practicing gratitude, even on the days when it feels like there’s little to be grateful for.

Learning to love myself—not because of what I’ve achieved, but simply because I am.

The Daily Choice

Happiness isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily practice. It’s choosing to focus on what you can control, to let go of what doesn’t serve you, and to create joy in the small moments. Some days, it’s as simple as taking a deep breath and saying, “Today, I’ll find one thing to be happy about.”

It’s not about being happy all the time—that’s unrealistic and unhealthy. It’s about choosing happiness when you can and giving yourself grace when you can’t.

Is It Worth It?

Absolutely. Choosing happiness has been the hardest journey I’ve ever taken, but it’s also been the most rewarding. It’s taught me that happiness isn’t about reaching a destination—it’s about finding meaning in the journey itself.

If you’re struggling to find happiness, know this: you’re not alone. It’s a choice you can make, even in the smallest of ways. And every time you choose it, you take one step closer to living the life you deserve.

What About You?

What does happiness look like for you? Have you made choices that brought you closer to it? I’d love to hear about your journey. Let’s share, connect, and inspire one another.
